To the Carestiato Refuge

From Passo Duran to Rifugio Carestiato:

The starting point is at Passo Duran. To reach it from Agordo, climb up towards La Valle Agordina and continue for 10 km, the last of which the road becomes particularly narrow and treacherous: pay attention. There are good parking facilities in front of the two refuges.

The first part of the ascent to the hut follows the track of the Cai 549 path UNTIL the intersection with the small forest road, which is also used by the hut's snowcat, and is therefore most often practicable with walking boots, preferably accompanied by crampons.

The route is never excessively steep, with some counter-slope sections that make the ascent pleasant and allow, where the vegetation opens up, to admire the mountains that surround Passo Duran, among which the San Sebastiano group stands out.

With two final hairpin bends, we reach the Carestiato hut, which is a wonderful balcony over the Moiazza and the valley floor to the south-west.

The return is by the same route as the ascent. It is recommended that, before embarking on winter excursions, you consult the snow and avalanche bulletin of the Arabba weather centre.
